Cameroonian research building its future with CY

CY Cergy Paris University has maintained privileged relations with Cameroon’s higher education institutions for over ten years. Relationships that cover both science and technology, and Educational sciences as well. Several theses in co-tutorship, a double degree Engineer Master, internship mobilities and many publications show the productive relation.
Via the “mechanics of materials and structures” lab directed by Albert NOUMOWE, the Laboratory of Mechanics and Materials of Civil Engineering (L2MGC) is the leading architect of the cooperation, which has been strengthened for five years.
With the universities of Youndé 1 and Douala, there are thus three theses in cotutelle. The work focuses on innovative concrete formulation, microstructure, durability and thermomechanical behaviour by incorporating local materials in the context of sustainable development.
The collaboration between Cameroon and the L2MGC has expanded through establishing a double Master of Civil Engineering degree with the Institut Universitaire Catholique Saint-Jérôme de Douala (SJD), managed on the CY side by Emmanuel ELAT. In July 2022, Patrick COURILLEAU, Vice-President in charge of Education and Training, and Valérie ZWILLING, Deputy general director in charge of internationalisation, attended the graduation ceremony.
The cooperation with Yaoundé 1 also means two PhD in cotutelle with the Faculty of Education Sciences. The first research is related to the pedagogy of climate change. Minerve Flore DJEUMI KWEKEU develops it with the EMA laboratory (Ecole-Mutations et Apprentissages). Steven WOUAMBA NJONTE works on the second in Didactics and Digital Education with CY’s BONHEURS lab.
CY also co-publishes with Youndé 1 in many fields: sciences of decision, computer science, economics and finance, mathematics, psychology, arts and humanities, and others.
These partnerships are actively supported through different funds, among which the Initiative of Excellence is one of the most important. CY was awarded this tool in 2017 to support cooperation.
The French Embassy in Cameroon also gives full support by awarding scholarships of excellence, which promotes the mobility of researchers. Among other students doing their research internship in France, Alain KAMDEM is an excellent example of the public prize winner at the regional final of the competition Ma Thèse in 180 seconds (MT180).
For CY, research means delivering knowledge and economic development. In this dynamic, the L2MGC forges numerous collaborations, such as the active alliance with SIKA Cameroon, a subsidiary of the Swiss group, in charge of the production and distribution of innovative and efficient products for the formulation of concrete throughout Central Africa. Another example is its association with the EXPLORA laboratory, which specialises in studies in the field of major public and road works projects.
Based on the strength of these productive partnerships, CY Cergy Paris and its Cameroonian partners aim to increase their collaboration toward sustainability by strengthening student exchange schemes, joint training and research. Together, they develop the dynamic of scientific excellence and internationalisation of research in both Civil Engineering and other disciplines. For the L2MGC, the next step is the creation of an associated international laboratory in Civil Engineering, including the University of Douala (ENSPD), the University of Yaoundé I (ENSPY), and the Saint-Jérôme Catholic University Institute of Douala (SJD).
