Women in Sports: A Goal for Equality

For too long, women have faced significant barriers in pursuing careers in sports. A new initiative is working to change that. The E-Wins (European Women in Sport) project, launched in 2021, aims to address the specific challenges women face in their sports careers and promote the feminization of sports across Europe. With partners including sports associations and football clubs from Spain, Poland, Finland, the UK, and Bulgaria, as well as universities such as the University of Physical Education in Krakow, the Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia, and Staffordshire University, ILEPS and CY Cergy Paris University are working together to draft policy recommendations for adaptive governance of women’s sports practices.

Football was an obvious choice, given the sector’s rich diversity of profiles and practices. After conducting an exhaustive survey in each partner country, the project has developed tools to raise awareness of the issues faced by women in sports and explore ways to include and support them. As a culmination of their efforts, ILEPS and CYU are hosting an international conference in June 2023 on “The Challenges of Feminization of Soccer and Other Ball Games: Stakes, Good Practices, and New Representations.” The conference will provide an opportunity to present the project’s results and open the discussion to other perspectives in Europe and beyond. The meeting will create a space for sharing knowledge, experiences, and innovative solutions. It will bring together stakeholders such as researchers, experts, athletes, federations and club leaders, women’s sports specialists, and more. Translation in French and English will be provided.

ILEPS, a private higher education school founded in 1944, provides training in sciences and techniques of physical and sports activities for future coaches and managers in the sports and leisure sector. As a component establishment of CY Cergy Paris University and labelled as a Private Higher Education Establishment of General Interest (EESPIG), the school is well-positioned to promote gender equality in sports. Co-financed by the Erasmus+ program, the E-Wins project represents a significant step forward in this critical work.
