Présentation

This is the second year of a two year Master program in Theoretical Physics, entirely taught in English in an international setting, it is a natural continuation of the first year of the Master of Physics option Theoretical Physics
(one of the paths of the  first year (M1) of the CYU 's Master of  Physics).

It aims at providing students with a high-level formation in Theoretical and Computational Physics, together with a deeper insight in one selected research field: Statistical Physics, Quantum systems, Condensed matter, Integrable Systems, Complex Systems, Dynamical Systems.
In addition to solid foundations in Fundamental Physics, the students will have acquired a reinforced formation in the domain they chose not only through the specialized courses they take during the third semester but also by the practical experience they will have obtained after four month of research work.

Enjeux

This second year of Master definitely prepare students to start a PhD work in the domain of theoretical physics, nevertheless it has been done in such a way, that reorientation to more applied physics is made possible.
The choice of a national French degree fully taught in English has the double advantage of an international open up:
It makes this training accessible to students from all over the world and allows world specialists to participate in the teaching and supervision of students, thus guaranteeing excellence in the discipline.
It also allows French-speaking students to receive disciplinary training in a familiar environment, while being exposed to international realities and improving their practical and professional English.
At the European level, the absence of language barriers facilitates exchanges of both students and professors between universities and possible double degrees.

Admission

Pré-requis

Niveau(x) de recrutement

Master 1

Formation(s) requise(s)

240 ECTS or equivalent (3/4 years BSc one year of Master) in an academic program including knowledge of Electromagnetism, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, and Mathematics for Physics are required. A good mastering of English is essential to follow the lectures. Knowledge in coding (python for example) and computational methods is a real plus.

Modalités de candidature

There are three ways to apply :
  • e-candidat (for students in France)
  • Campus France (from abroad)
  • Direct application to the program (when a personal contact with the master academic committee is needed)

Modalités de candidature spécifiques

Non-EU students have to apply  via their  local Campus France agency (through a new procedure called "Etudes en France").

Candidates can in addition, if they have special issues to discuss (like fees exemption or grant application), apply by sending an email to one of the academic directors of the program (they should in any case contact their local Campus France agency).

Conditions d'admission / Modalités de sélection

Admission is based on the student's transcripts, the syllabus of his or her curriculum and recommendation of professors. The study of the application file may be completed by an online interview.

Programme

This second year of Master of Theoretical Physics of CYU is fully taught in English. It is supported by the research teams of the Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modélisation (LPTM CNRS UMR 8089).Students acquire solid foundations in Quantum Mechanics, Mathematical and Statistical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Dynamical Systems. They are exposed to a broad spectrum of subjects: from the mathematical accuracy of integrable models to the complexity of biological systems, social paradigms or communication networks. They get a reinforced formation in their domain of specialization through the optional courses they take during the third semester but also by the practical experience they have thanks to four months of research work.

Contenu de la formation

1st semester 2nd Yr (S3)

Compulsory courses :

  • Advanced Quantum Mechanics (4 ECTS)
  • Advanced Statistical Mechanics (4 ECTS)
  • Introduction to Dynamical Systems (4 ECTS)
  • Introduction to Hamiltonian systems  (3 ECTS)
  • Renormalization Group (3 ECTS)

Choice 1: Option “Simulation of Quantum Systems”

Decay of a flipped spin in an antiferromagnetic spin chain into two domain walls

The block of compulsory courses can be complemented by the following block of 4 options that lead to a specialization in quantum many-body problems and their numerical simulation:

  • Quasi-exact Numerical Methods for Quantum Systems (3 ECTS)
  • Quantum Monte Carlo (3 ECTS)
  • Quantum many-body problem (3 ECTS)
  • Artificial intelligence – Machine Learning (3 ECTS)

Choice 2: Option “Physics of Complex Living Systems”

E Coli on_heterogeneous Environment

Alternatively, the block of compulsory courses can be complemented by the following block of 4 options that lead to a specialization in complex systems and the physics of living matter:

  • Introduction to Chaotic and Complex Systems (3 ECTS)
  • Physics of living matter (3 ECTS)
  • Networks: Theory and Applications (3 ECTS)
  • Artificial intelligence – Machine Learning (3 ECTS)

Choice 3: General Theory

Finally, students have the possibility to construct their own profile in theoretical physics. For this purpose, they choose 12 ECTS among the courses of choices 1 & 2, or for example (opening and compatibility subject to demand):

  • French for Foreigners / Scientific Communication in English(*) (3 ECTS)
  • Symmetries in physics (3 ECTS)

The subjects of the tutored projects are to be chosen by the student in agreement with the pedagogical committee. One tutored project (3ECTS) amounts to a full time work of two weeks, plus writing a report and preparing an oral presentation. The student may decide, with the approval of the Master committee, to gather two projects into a larger one.

2nd semester 2nd Yr (S4)

The student will choose a research subject among those proposed by our laboratory or any research institution approved by the Master Pedagogical Committee. This internship (30 ECTS) is concluded by a written report and a public Master thesis defense.

(*) Proposed to improve English skills of French speaking students

There is a compulsory internship of a minimum of 8 weeks, if literature search has been done for 4 weeks and continued with a 2-weeks tutored project to prepare to the internship.
In case of a bare internship, it should last for a minimum of 16 weeks.

A collaboration between LPTM, the Theoretical Physics and the Condensed Matter Departments of Zaragoza University and the Institut for Biocomputational Physics (BIFI) of Zaragoza has led to a joint Master program, which has received the label "Spanish-French International Master Program" and proposes to especially selected students a double diploma (our Master and the Master en Fisica y Tecnologias Fisicas from Zaragoza University) including an international mobility of at least one semester during the two years.

In addition, the physics department has a large number of international partnerships.
Of Erasmus type:
University of: Bologna, Chester, Edinburgh, Oldenburg, Parma, Zaragoza, Firenze, Groningen, Mons, München.
Or not:
University of: Warwick, Montréal (CA), Laval (CA), Osaka Prefecture (Japon), Kazan (Russie), NUS (Singapour), Pusan (Corée), FUMEC (Brésil), Buenos Aires (Argentine).

Temps plein

Short after September 15th start the lectures (and exercises classes). Mid-term exams take place after 6 or 7 weeks of courses. The same scheme of 6 or 7 weeks of classes repeat until the Christmas holidays. Examinations for the compulsory courses take place at the beginning of January. Then starts another 6 or 7 weeks’ period of classes, dedicated to options and projects ending with an examination session which closes the first semester. After the winter holidays starts the last period of the year consisting in four months of research work (that may include some literature search and tutored project if needed before the internship), evaluated around June 15th by a master thesis defense.

Aménagé

The jury meets and decides on the results of the year for each student. A second session of exams is proposed to the students who have failed (except for the projects and internship). The final results for the year are known about July 15th.

Débouchés professionnels

Secteurs d'activité ou type d'emploi

The expected career after a two-year Master in theoretical physics followed by a PhD in the same field is clearly the one of academic research (in universities or research institute either in France (CNRS, CEA…) or abroad).
If students want to have a different trajectory, the number of opportunities for physicists, after a master's degree (or PhD degree) is large in a wide variety of domains (Research and Development for products or processes, Teaching, Financial Analysis, Quality Assessment, Scientific Communication, Network Management for transportation, energy supply…).
